Sometimes, people become heroes because they’re in the right place at the right time.
When this happens, they usually can’t give an explanation of why their day’s events happened to unfold the way they and allow them to become a hero in the first place.
Nine-year-old Elysia knows this feeling all too well.
She became a guardian angel simply because she second-guessed herself.
During one summer morning, Elysia was out playing near a creek on her Indiana property.
She thought she kept hearing something coming from some bushes nearby.
At first, she sort of ignored it then assumed one of the family’s piglets had gotten out of its pen, so Elysia went into the bushes to retrieve the pig.
That’s when she made a disturbing, yet critical discovery…
As Elysia got closer to the are where she heard the noise, she realized that she wasn’t dealing with an escaped piglet.
“I just saw pink legs kicking away,” Elysia said. “I knew it was alive and I knew we had something. I could not second guess myself. I knew we had to get help.”
Elysia immediately got her mother Heidi who told her to dial 9-1-1.
Heidi says the newborn still had her placenta and umbilical cord attached to her and was sunburnt and covered in maggots.
“I thought it was a robotic doll. Then I ran to the baby and scooped it up and I said, ‘Elysia run to the house and call 911 as soon as possible,’” Heidi said. “I got to the house and we put one of our baby blankets around her.”
Local law enforcement determined the baby was only a few hours old or was born overnight. They called the abandoned newborn “Baby Jane Doe.”
They also gave Elysia a new name that day, too; “Guardian angel.”
