A career as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service is not an easy job. Carriers are on their feet day in and day out and need to survive in all weather conditions. Sometimes, they must work through violent snowstorms or high winds. On the other end of the spectrum, they’re out under the blaring sun for eight hours at a time. It is hard work. And few people recognize their dedication to getting people their mail. But one boy did not forget his letter carrier. On a hot summer day, he left a special ice-cold treat out for the mailman. And it made a world of difference for the hard worker.
The temperatures in Newport News, Virginia were reaching the peak of the heat wave. When a little boy saw the thermometer rise up to 105 degrees, the first person he started worrying about was his mailman. He didn’t want the hard-working letter carrier to have to go out in the sun without a single break or respite.
So young Carmine McDaniel put his creative imagination to work. And soon enough, he had come up with an idea to help his mailman out. And then his act of generosity was inadvertently caught on the home security camera – it was one of the cutest things you’ll see all year.
The temperatures were dangerously high. And little Carmine wanted his door-to-door letter carrier to be thankful he stopped at his family house that hot summer day.
“I just thought because it was really hot outside and I didn’t want him to maybe pass out or anything, because they are really important so people can pay their bills and stuff like that. I didn’t want him to pass out, pretty much,” Carmine told WVEC.
So what did little Carmine do? He filled a cooler with ice and cold drinks. Then he made sure the mailman knew that he could take anything he wanted to help cool him down on the super hot day. The small gesture made a huge deal for the mailman who was hardly getting through the day with the record-breaking heat.
Meanwhile, Carmine’s mom snapped video footage of her little boy demonstrating his lovable spirit. He was so kind it will melt your heart.
She shared the video to her Instagram page where it went viral. In the short clip, you can see the letter carrier sharing his appreciation for the young boy’s kindness.
“Thank god, thank you,” the postman says in the video as a grabs up a few ice-cold drinks. “Oh my god, yes! Whew.”
Then he decides that maybe he should take another drink or two for the rest of his day in the heat.
“Yes! I’ll take ’em all!” the mailman says. “I’ll take a water and a Gatorade.”
While not everyone is as kind as Carmine is, the letter carrier told WVEC that small gestures like this make him love his job – and help him get some relief from the heat.
“It makes it worthwhile,” said the mailman.
