The human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. With proper care a small cut in your hand can automatically heal within days. A bruise or injury can self-heal as the cells in our body regenerate quickly to replace the dead cell debris. But for major injuries like lost limbs, surgery is needed to repair and save body parts.
Meanwhile in China, a new surgical procedure for cut limbs is being done that involves temporarily attaching them to another body part. Unbelievable!
A man named Zhou from Changsa in Hunan Province accidentally cut his left hand by a spinning blade machine while at work in a factory. He was rushed to the Xiangya Hospital in Changsha where doctors examined his condition.
But Zhou’s arm and his severed hand were fatally damaged by the accident, attaching it immediately is impossible
So doctors performed a bizarre medical procedure that is the same as the operation they have already done successfully in 2013.
Lead by Dr. Tang Juyu, Xiangya Hospital’s head of microsurgery, Zhou’s left hand was grafted to his right leg for a month.
The procedure was essential so that the hand could have a natural flow of blood to keep it alive, until the nerves in the wrists healed naturally.
Dr. Tuyu explained: “Under normal temperatures, a severed finger needs to resume blood supply within 10 hours, but that time is even shorter for a separated limb. If a limb is short of blood for too long, its tissues die and it will be unsalvageable.”
After one month, his left hand was reattached to his wrist successfully. Doctors performed the groundbreaking surgery for 10 hours.
This x-ray shows his hand after being reattached to the wrist. Zhou can now move his fingers slightly. After some time he will hopefully regain the use of his left hand again. Amazing!
This story is similar to what happened to Xiao Wei in 2013, who also lost his right hand due to an accident at work.
On November 10, 2013 surgeons successfully reattached his hand after it was grafted to his ankle for one month.
